Description
Clenbuterol is a synthetic compound classified as a β2-adrenergic agonist. Unlike anabolic steroids, it is not a hormone derivative but rather a bronchodilator developed to treat asthma and other breathing disorders. In medical contexts, it works by relaxing airway muscles and widening the bronchial passages.
Although not approved for human use in many countries (such as the U.S. and EU), Clenbuterol has veterinary applications, particularly in treating respiratory issues in horses. It has also been misused outside of medicine for its stimulant-like and thermogenic properties, particularly in weight-loss and performance-enhancement contexts.
Pharmacology:
-
Class: β2-adrenergic agonist
-
Form: Usually oral tablets or liquid (medical/veterinary)
-
Effects: Increases airway dilation, stimulates the central nervous system, promotes thermogenesis and fat metabolism
-
Half-life: ~25–39 hours in humans
Risks & Side Effects:
Clenbuterol misuse can cause significant health issues, including:
-
Tremors and anxiety
-
Increased heart rate and palpitations
-
High blood pressure
-
Cardiac hypertrophy and arrhythmias with prolonged use
-
Muscle cramps due to electrolyte imbalance
Legal & Sporting Status:
-
Approved in veterinary medicine but often restricted in livestock due to food safety concerns
-
Not approved for human medical use in many countries
-
Banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as a performance-enhancing substance
-
Detection in athletes is treated as a doping violation
