Description

Oxymetholone, often known by the brand name Anadrol, is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) first introduced in the late 1950s. Originally, it was developed for legitimate medical purposes, such as the treatment of severe anemia, osteoporosis, and muscle wasting in chronic illnesses.

It is considered one of the most powerful oral anabolic steroids, with strong anabolic properties but also significant risks. Because of its potency and associated side effects, it has been restricted or discontinued for medical use in many countries.

Pharmacology:

  • Form: Oral tablets

  • Half-life: ~9 hours

  • Chemical class: 17α-alkylated derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

  • Characteristics: Strong anabolic activity, minimal androgenic activity, does not aromatize directly to estrogen but may cause estrogen-like side effects

Risks & Side Effects:
The oral form of Oxymetholone is particularly associated with health risks, including:

  • Liver toxicity (due to 17α-alkylation)

  • Water retention and bloating

  • Gynecomastia (due to estrogenic activity)

  • Altered cholesterol levels and cardiovascular strain

  • Hormonal suppression and long-term endocrine disruption

Legal & Sporting Status:

  • Classified as a controlled substance in most countries

  • Prohibited in competitive sports under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list

  • Medical use today is rare and highly regulated
